Night time in the forest was both a blessing and a curse. Night time had to be Akeelah’s favorite time of day. It was only natural for a nocturnal beast to be drawn out during the night. It was the only time of day in the forest that she was safest from being spotted…by humans at least. Though not many humans dared to venture out this far into the woods, even fewer dared do so when it was this dark out. Even if they did it was almost impossible for them to see her small and sleek figure in the safety of the brush and the heavy darkness the night brought. Her prey didn’t fair much better than the humans did. If her prey wasn’t already half asleep by the time she found them she was well hidden enough to give them a little surprise. But night time wasn’t exactly the safest thing even for a predator like her. Amongst all the usual wildlife that called this place home lurked other supernaturals. Some were harmless, either just minding their own business, or were shifters like her just taking the chance they had to stretch their legs. But then there were more dangerous types, those that were powerful enough to make prey out of pretty much anything they could find. Some killed people like her for food, others for fun, and then there were the ones that preferred to keep their victims alive, but harm them nonetheless.
Akeelah already had her fair share of these people. Lately though the amount of sick twisted bastards that she had stumbled on here had amazed her. What was wrong with her lately? Was her luck this terrible? Or was there just an abnormal spike in psychopaths in New Orlands? Akeelah didn’t have nearly as much trouble with fiends like that shadow demon or crazed shifter when she used to live out here. Random attacks on her nightly strolls were becoming so common now that it was making her a little nervous to venture out here anymore. So far she had been lucky, either finding some way to just get away from the situation or was lucky enough to run into someone she knew first that could help her get away. But she couldn’t rely on such things much. Hell, she didn’t even want to rely on others. Akeelah was supposed to be better than that. She had to be strong enough to care for herself, even if it was against a powerful demon.
Besides what was she going to do about these incidents? Not come to the forest? Hah, the idea was laughable. Akeelah didn’t have anywhere else that she could go to. Even if it was safer indoors she would go insane if she had to spend the rest of her life inside Gil’s apartment. This place was still her territory anyway. Akeelah didn’t own the entire forest but the place she was walking around now was a part of her turf. To abandon it was like handing it over to the damn psychopaths that she was so worried about. And there was no damn way in hell that she was going to do that. Giving up was worse than just letting them win. So fighting back against her worries Akeelah set off to the forest, walking through her territory once more. At first she still felt a little anxious but over time the feeling died. Soon enough she felt comfortable enough to go strolling on by in her human form. The forest was quiet, besides the usual sounds of the night there had been no signs of any predators (besides herself). Maybe for once she was safe.
