Shane was . . . unnerved, for one of the first and only times of his long life. His wife was infuriated with him, and for good reason. At least, in the human sense of it all. He certainly felt no need for her frustration, and while he acted the dutiful husband, doing what he could to save his marriage, he definitely felt no love for the woman. He never had, and he knew he never would. He had never loved anyone but himself and the things he was able to do. A devilish grin grew on his face, and he chuckled a chuckle deep with madness. Perhaps he could have a "pet" take care of the woman, to remove her from the picture completely. Maybe the little one, too, although he was sure he could find some use for her.
A man dressed in a white coat and glasses stepped timidly into Shane's office, clipboard in hand. "The last one didn't make it, Sir, but . . ." He swallowed, nervous under the cool gaze of his employer. ". . . but we've made a new acquisition, Sir." Shane held out his hand expectantly, and with a slight jerk, the scientist stepped forward and handed the clipboard over. Shane raised a curious brow at the man before pulling the clipboard close to him and looking down to scan it, scrutinizing the file presented to him, page by page. His free hand went to his chin as he considered the person this file represented, and he laughed. "Put her through the new program. I am anxious to see the results."
