Roxy's fingers shook as she cursed the pantywaists who had outlawed smoking in the Arcadia. She didn't like going long without a cigarette, and the park was simply too big to get through quickly. Her mood was further soured by the sore looks she was getting from parents when she cursed, with one elderly woman ushering her giggling grandkids away with muttered words. Turning to the fleeing back of the elderly woman, Roxy extended one thin, delicate middle finger toward her. There had to be adults in this neon-colored cotton candy nightmare. As she turned around to look at the line of games and stands in the seasonal cardinal, she finally spotted something worth her time.
Pushing past the throngs of children, she eyed the sign outside the dark booth. "Taste Testing!" the sign declared, and the line below demanded that patrons provide ID. She grinned toothily and ducked under the ribbons, the cloying scent of alcohol and mildew mixing together in a powerful aroma that she appreciated solely for its intensity. It had been worth becoming human to experience even something like this, which had been beyond her ken when she was younger and more easily manipulated. Sitting down on a wooden stool, she lifted her fingers to the man, who grinned at her.
"Sorry, little lady, but we're sampling Moonshine today," the red-haired Irishman said, pulling at his curly red beard. "It's too strong for kids, and even if you were old enough, you look like a stiff breeze would blow you over."
Gritting her teeth, Roxy pulled her ID from her back pocket. It was a fake, to be sure, but it had cost her a fortune, and it was real enough to get her a bank account. This nitwitted carnie had no chance of figuring it out. He took it and examined it for an insultingly long time. By the time that Roxy was contemplating homicide, he handed it back to her and shrugged. His meaty hand pulled a glass from the line of clean dishes and placed it in front of her.
"If you insist," he sighed, tilting his head and pouring her a drink.
Meeting his eyes with a cheeky grin, she downed the whole thing in a single gulp, savoring the apple-pie flavor and the route it burned down her throat. It was excellent, no doubt. Dimwitted as the man seemed to be, he certainly knew about his Moonshine. His eyes widened in disbelief as she licked her red lips with a delicate tongue and placed the glass upside down on the counter.
"How much for the jar?" she asked, jerking her chin toward the Mason jar that held the rest of the drink.
"Twenty-five bucks," he answered, grinning now. "Two for forty."
She peeled the bills from a stack and handed the cash off. Bagging the liquid in brown paper sacks, he handed it over to his strange patron. Snatching it away from him, she stepped out of the booth, only to be knocked sideways as a person ran smack into her. She barely managed to keep grip on her purchase as she turned angrily to look at the person.
"Watch where you're going!" she snarled.

During Alex's time on Earth she'd never been to a carnival until now. Games and fattening food had not even been Alex's list during her first decade here and after a while she just never felt the desire to. But there was a first time for everything and after overhearing some of her co-workers talk about it she figured why not. Work was stressful, having to memorize all those facts concerning ancient pottery and old weapons gave her a headache every now and then. A break was nice, plus she could only do so much while off in the backroom of the museum. Reconnaissance. That was how Alex decided to phrase it. Places like these were perfect she had deemed. Crowds of people moving about. Parents trying to keep track of their overly excited children barely had time to watch their surroundings. There was also the quite disturbing tendency of human children to get snatched up by others. Alex didn't like that one bit. As the angel passed various attractions she took in the mass of noise. Vendors shouting at people to buy their wares and children laughing and screaming in joy. One moment these creatures were warring and the next they were having innocent fun with one another. She looked over to her left and saw a booth displaying a sign that said: Ring Toss, in big sparkly letters. A child was currently trying, prompting Alex to pause and watch. Unfortunately the kid missed. Alex shook her head in sympathy and walked forward. The angel gave a soft smile to get their attention and the mother moved her child out of the way. "Wanna give it a try pretty lady? " the booth worker held up a ring " Get all three around the bottles and win a prize. " the man explained. Mhm. Alex replayed the child's attempts, noting the way the ring wasn't able to keep from bouncing about to fall. Alex had overheard one of her co-workers say that these games were rigged and if that was true then it wasn't fair. Alex took the small plastic ring and studied it, meanwhile the man told her to move back some. Once Alex was behind the line she enchanted the ring and threw it. The orange hoop slid around a bottle. She threw a green hoop next and like the first it hooked around a bottle. Finally a third and it followed the other two. " Good throw. " the man grinned before gesturing to the array of stuffed animals available. Alex looked down at the child. " Which one do you think I should get? " she asked, trying not to sound rude or anything. The little boy looked defeated as he looked over at the stuffed toys. " The purple elephant one. " he said, clearly saddened. Alex nodded and pointed to the purple elephant. The man went over and pulled it down, giving it to Alex. She stroked it's fur before following behind the mother and son as they left. Alex could her the woman trying to cheer up her child with the promise of funnel cake. Giving a warm smile Alex sped up, calling out to them. When they stopped she bent down and handed the boy the elephant. He looked at it in disbelief and the mother started to insist Alex keep it since it was hers but Alex, ever the sucker for kids, insisted back that the boy take it. In the end the boy came out happy. With a light wave Alex went on her way. As she passed by more booths she noticed a significant concentration of adults. It was then that something in her went on the alert and she immediately assumed it was a demon but upon second reading Alex was not so sure. In fact as she moved closer the angel started to gradually recognize the feel of a fallen angel. Moving about the crowd of people, she pushed past men and women reeking of alcohol. It was as she was pushing through, somewhat distracted, that she almost bumped into children running past. Alex watched as they darted among the throng of people but one girl didn't make it and crashed into a woman in front of her. When she was yelled out the child's face turned red and she started wailing, very loudly. Alex rushed over to help the child, noticing the woman and what she was. " Go find your parents little one. " Alex told the child as she helped her up. Casting a soothing wave of magic on the girl, Alex smiled as the girl ran off. Then raising to her feet Alex looked at the agitated fallen. " You shouldn't yell at children like that. " her glossed lips curled into a smile to go with her warning. Roxy O'Shea

Pinching the bridge of her nose with her thumb and index finger, she tried to ignore the budding headache that was spawned by the noise and the lack of nicotine. It was a few moments before she registered that it wasn't just those things that were causing the headache. It was her empathetic sense, which was weak on the best of days, alerting her to the presence of an angel. A low growl formed at the base of her throat as she turned to the being, who was manifesting as a dark-skinned woman who was friend to all sniveling brats. What joy. Her lip curled in disgust as she looked the woman over. She practically radiated goodness, and it was disgusting.
"If you don't tell them what pathetic wastes of flesh they are, they'll go around thinking that they're special," Roxy pointed out, eyeing the fleeing children like she would an insect. "It's kinder to let them know how worthless they are up front."
Shaking the long black bangs out of her eyes, she dismissed them and turned her back on the group. She was liking this adult region of the carnival much better than the area with the children's games. She could smell smoke on the wind, and it wasn't just the food. There was a carnie around here somewhere that had found a place to smoke, and she immediately determined to find where it was. If he or she didn't want to let her join them, she could always threaten to report them to whoever was in charge of this place. After all, they probably didn't want smokers upwind of those brats.
With those thoughts in mind, she almost didn't realize that the angel was still standing there. Her angelic aura was making Roxy's headache worse, and it didn't do anything for her mood. She would have to get the girl to go away, and if experience was any indicator, it just meant that she would have to be ill-humored enough that she didn't want to deal with Roxy anymore. No problem. She was incredibly talented at being a pain in the ass.
"What, you got a problem?" Roxy asked the angel, smirking. "You gonna tell me that they're all super special and need to be protected? Because I might point out that there's way too many of them already. We can surely spare a few."

The fallen's barbed words made Alex take notice of some disapproving spectators but they quickly went back to their own devices, whether that be because of the nasty attitude the woman before her radiated or because they would rather be drunk was debatable. Alex herself couldn't help but let her warm smile drop at the corners a little. She'd never got the chance to really look into a fallen angel. All she'd known beyond little recorded bits was that it was best not to do something that could cause you to become one. Perhaps that was why this one was so foul? Because she'd been taken away from their Father's light? Just snapping at child in such a manner all because they accidentally bumped into her had to have some reason behind it. Then again maybe she was just rude as Alex had discovered with the various temperaments of humans. Some people are just ugly she remarked in silence.
" I would hardly call them worthless. They just need a little push to reach their full potential. A positive push. " Alex countered.
Alex watched as the woman turned to leave. She crossed her arms and shook her head in pity, clicking her teeth with her tongue in a repeated 'tisk' sound. Humans were anything but perfect beings of goodness but Alex felt that they didn't deserve the acidic comments of this fallen.
The angel thought about following the other woman. Though she hadn't been a scribe for some time now she still liked to gather information on new things and the habits of this fallen angel seemed like it would be interesting. Maybe she could find out why this individual was such a nasty one. Before she could place one foot in front of the other however, the fallen was back glaring at her and spitting more venom. Her words bothered Alex, they hit a nerve and suddenly Alex found her smile dropping as her expression went cold.
" Your words sound similar to a certain group. " she spoke calmly, not a hint of playfulness or anything similar in her tone " Is that why you fell? Are all fallen as bitter as you? The lack of Father's grace can do significant damage apparently." Alex did not bother to hide the barbs in her words.
