Work had gone long tonight, as it often did, but instead of being tired, he felt jumpy and full of energy. There was really nothing to see in his neighborhood, but he walked past his apartment anyway, putting the key back in his wallet. The apartments were never this quiet in the daytime, when even his rudimentary sound-proofing couldn't keep noise from bleeding through the thin walls. Sleeping during the day just wasn't an option for someone who had ears as sensitive as his. Good sense told him that he needed to get his sleeping done now, at two in the morning, instead of waiting until dawn, when the noise would return, but he had just spent seven straight hours standing in one place. That wasn't what his wolfish instincts wanted to do at all. A distance hunter by nature, the wolf wanted just to run for miles on end, chasing down whatever it was pursuing. Jogging was a poor substitute, but at least walking would take the edge off.
Peeling the black jacket coat off of his wide shoulders, he loosened the top button of his white shirt and folded the jacket over his arm. The rooftops dripped leftovers from the afternoon rain, a constant rhythm of sound that put his nerves on edge, but he had gotten used to such irritations. He could understand why wolves were never found near human population centers. There was too much noise, too much sound. Too many smells. Even now, his sinuses ached from the increase in scent that came with rain and humidity. The acid from the puddles in the street mixed with the noxious oil scent of old fried chicken from the trashcans, making his stomach roll.
Sighing deeply, he looked up at the moon. It was only a quarter full, but it was the brightest light in the sky, since the city drowned out the lights of the stars, and the satellites couldn't hold a candle to that level of light output. The forests on the outskirts of town were sounding better and better all the time. It would take a couple of hours to walk all that way, but he had nothing planned. Then again, the park would be almost as good. There would be trees there, and trees tended to absorb the sour scents of pollution, replacing them with pine and oak. Even the mulch would be an improvement over asphalt and garbage. It wouldn't diminish the noise much, though.
Pausing in indecision and deep in thought, he didn't notice the unfamiliar scent of strangers on the nearly dead wind.
