It was a bright, beautiful saturday morning when Lambert Baumann made the long journey into New Orlands. It had been a long time since he had stepped foot outside of Axium. For over a decade Lambert had locked himself deep within his sector of the massive building, dedicating all of his time and effort into his research and on his baby girl Mimi. From the moment he was employed up till now he had no reason to go out in the world. He didn't even miss it. He had no reason to. There was nothing out in New Orlands for him anymore. His research was too extreme and defied the basic rules of appropriate scientific procedures for him to work anywhere else. And his social life...well...when his wife died what little of a social life he had had gone with her. There was no point to leaving Axium so he didn't. He didn't even miss the city. But starting today that would change. His employers were impressed enough with his work that they wanted to shift his focus elsewhere. With the discovery of supernatural creatures in the world, they needed capable men to bring these beings in to help advance their research.
Axium needed men like him.
Two months had passed since Lambert had received orders to go into the city and capture new test subjects. He had spent countless hours preparing for this day. Just the idea of all the new discovery and first pick of fresh subjects made him so excited to come back. He should have been happy when it finally came time to leave...but he wasn't. Lambert had been rather solemn as the days went by, the closer to his inevitable departure came the more and more upset he got. It was all because of Mimi. Besides all the new work that awaited him in the city, what made Lambert so excited to go to on this trip was taking Mimi with him. Mimi had been too young to remember what life in the outside world was like. He wanted so badly to show her all the things she had missed. He wanted to see the look on her face when he took her around the city and back to the place she had been born in. She was suppose to be here in this car with him right now as he made the journey back to their old home. But complications had made it impossible for him to take her with him. He had been forced to leave her behind. His employers promised to send him an personal assistant to his place when he got settled down, and as much as hand raised soldiers as he needed when he called for them. But it wasn't the same if it wasn't Mimi.
Lambert drove the rest of the journey in solemn silence. His heart and mind were clouded with dark, angry, thoughts but somehow he knew where he was going even with his mind so distracted. Though so much in the city changed somehow he still could tell where he was. When he finally made it into the East County Estates, and pulled into the driveway of his old house he was surprised to see how little his old home had changed. He had been told when he had first arrived in Axium that his home in the city would be taken care of in his absence, but he had no idea it would be this well. Lambert turned off the engine, grabbed what little belongings he bothered to take with him, before getting out of the car and headed to the door. He fished his old key out of his pockets and stepped inside for the first time in years.
The house was more or less the same way he had left it years ago. Besides some new furniture being switched around (probably to keep up with the times) nothing much had changed. None of that mattered though. The only place he needed to worry about was the basement. That was where he built his first lab. It would be the most important part of the house now. Lambert left his belongings by the front door and made his way downstairs to the lab. Like most of the house not much had changed about the lab. Most of the things he had left behind was still there. It was mostly tidy, though a light brush of one of the counters revealed a small layer of dust. “This will not do.” the man grumbled. This place needed an overhaul if he was expected to work here. Rolling up his sleeves, Lambert went to work. After grabbing some cleaning supplies he started scrubbing down every inch of the place, but just as he started getting into it the doorbell rang. What in the world...who dared interrupt his focus!? Maybe it was the assistant he was promised, at worse it could be some nosy neighbor or a salesman. Either way he was NOT happy. Lambert stormed up the stairs and swung the door wide open, glaring down at whoever had the audacity to bother him today. “What?”

Leaning closer to the mirror, Alice applied the last of her makeup. She grabbed her brush, pulling her wavy hair into a pony tail quickly, spraying the top of her head with a touch of hairspray to combat the humidity. It was one of the things she hated about living down south like this. She knew she would start sweating the instant she stepped into the heat of New Orlando. Alice studied her face, making sure everything was perfect before moving to her closet. She had been on a small vacation for the last week, waiting for her new assignment to get into town. She had recently transferred departments into that of a Personal Assistant for Lambert Baumann.
As Alice put on her red blouse and dark gray skirt she wondered what he was like. There were some whispers but nothing credible. Other than that he was accredit to his profession. She pulled on her black heels. This was her chance to start moving up in the company again. So she had to make a good first impression of course. Alice let out a small sigh. What a bore. As she left her apartment, she headed towards her car, looking at all the people. So many people in this city. She loved how crowded it could get here and staying closer to the city was one of the reasons she accepted the transfer.
After a while, Alice turned down the street that she needed, pulling up in front of a house. She double checked her reflection and got out of her car smoothly. "Here is to hoping its not going to be some boring stuffy guy..." Alice walked up the steps, ringing the doorbell, her purse on her shoulder. It took a minute, but the man who's photo she had seen just last night as she was looking up his credentials was at the door, glaring down at her. He was apparently angry, but she was punctual and he should have been expecting her. Keeping her face carefully neutral, she turned her cold blue eyes up to the man. "Mr. Baumann. I am Alice Templton, your personal assistant." Alice held out her hand to shake Lamberts hand, there was no way she was gonna let this guy intimidate her.
Maybe this job wouldn't be so boring after all.

It was no exaggeration to say that Lambert was not pleased hearing his doorbell going off. Who would dare interrupt him when he was working!? This was one of the things that he hated about working outside of Axium. There weren't a lot of moments like this, but when there were they were a major hindrance. It wasn't like he had someone to answer the door for him so he could continue cleaning in peace. He had to answer the door. Lambert Baumann was the last person you ever wanted to greet you at the door. His bad mood showed the moment he swung that door open. His cold gray eyes glared death down at the person who dared to bother him so. The person in question was some dolled up woman he had never seen before. He could smell the thick fragrance of hairspray and perfume wafting off her. She was far too well dressed to be an assistance sent by his employers, or at least someone that didn't take her job seriously enough. Lambert had dealt with women like this from time to time. Those fools thought they could charm their way into his good graces without putting as much dedication to their appearance than their profession. He couldn't stand people like that.
She couldn't be the assistant that he was promised. She looked like she was trying too hard to appear attractive to be some religious nut trying to invite him to her cult. Maybe she was a saleswoman. If that was the case he was not going to deal with her. Lambert was about to slam the door right in her face when she introduce herself as his new assistance. The man's eyes narrowed as he regarded her once more. She had to be kidding him. Did they really send him another half brained woman to be his assistant? He was not going to have a good time with this one dragging him around. It was a shame that he couldn't just ask for a new one, there was a good chance that Axium would just send him another fool to fill in her spot. He would have to deal with her for however long it took till he threw her aside for her incompetence or killed her.
“You are late.” the man replied coldly after awhile. “Next time when you are scheduled to meet your superiors do not waste your time playing dress up and meet them at your designated location before they arrive. You have just wasted four minutes of my time.” Lambert pulled his car keys out of his pocket and shoved them in the woman's outstretched hand. “Go to the trunk of my car and bring in my supplies. Bring them near the entrance of the basement and leave them there until further notice. Anything too heavy to carry leave it where it is, I will bring it myself later. If you break anything I will punish you for it.” After dumping those instructions on his new assistant Lambert turned around and headed back to the basement. There was still a lot of cleaning he needed to do so he had very little patience to babysit some ambitious looking tramp when he could spend his time more efficiently.

Alice blinked at the outburst, caught by surprise. She then looked at the keys in her hand and looked back up at Lamberts retreating back. Did he just...? She took a breath and followed him inside, clearing her throat before he reached the bottom of the stairs. This was going to be an interesting conversation and she was going to have to work hard not to blow her top but her teeth were already grinding at this new employer. He may be her boss, but she was not going to be treated like that.
"Excuse me. Mr. Baumann. I am your assistant." Alice let go and her voice took on a very cold edge to it. "I am not your lacky, not your maid, not just someone you can push around as you please. If you would like, I can have them send some yuppy you can push around, and I will go back to my department." What am I saying...this is my ticket to going up... "But I expect that they wouldn't last long and I would end up back here anyways. This is how I see this going, you can calm down, and not be mad that I showed up on time and it took you 4 minutes to answer the door and we can just move on with what we are supposed to do here, which Axium was so kind to leave out in the job transfer paperwork." Alice glared down at him. She would not be pushed around, she would not be ordered around like some low life who didn't know their ass from their head. She would stand her ground.
"Let me give you a minute to mull that over, Mr. Baumann." She turned around, his keys in hand and walked to his car. She didn't walk quickly, but she didn't move slowly either. Alice glared at the boxes. This is not going to be easy...I was hoping for some shmuck I could con into fucking up somewhere and I could subsequently take his job, not the case with Lambert...what do to....maybe I should have played a little nicer but that would have gotten me no where.... he would have just walked all over me because of my appearance. Well, lets see how this pans out...Alice grabbed a box, carrying it through the door and setting it down next to the basement stares, standing up straight. Maybe she should have listened a little closer to the rumors that were going around about him.
One thing she did know was that she was really starting to hate this guy.

Lambert should have known what he would see when he went to the door. The good doctor had been working under Axium long enough to know that they would not leave him alone for long without forcing someone to assist him. Most of the top scientist of the organization always had underlings working for them, some of them were interns, others minor scientist, or those that took care of more secretary tasks. Axium always gave him plenty of minor assistants to work under him. He disliked most of them. There were very few assistants worth his attention. Most were stupid or just plain incompetent. None stayed with him for long. Those that were lucky to keep their lives left him. There were seldom few that showed any potential as true scientists. Those lucky few he ever bothered to help nurture their talents so they could help make as much or even more of a contribution than he had to science.
This woman...she was not going to be one of those few. At first glance he could tell what she was. This...what was her name? Annie? Abbie? Whatever it was he couldn't be bothered remembering the name of someone that used their body to weasel their way to a higher status. Women like her were the worse. She should have been grateful that he didn't slam the door in her face at the sight of her. There was little point in fighting to get her removed. Until his darling daughter was better he would just be sent another one. Even when Mimi made a full recovery Axium would still send him some human to assist them. While she was here he would at least make some use of her. After wasting his time chastising Debbie he shoved his car keys in her hands and gave her a task. This was going to be the start of a long day and he wanted to get started.
That should have been the end of it until he could give her some more work to do but Natalie spoke. Her words actually made him stop to listen for a moment, though he still wore the same expression of displeasure that he did the moment he had seen her. What possessed him to even give her the time of day at all was baffling. Perhaps he was giving her the chance to prove that she had something worthy to offer? If he was she had yet to prove anything to him. “Are you done?” he asked nonchalantly. “If I wanted a maid I would have requested it myself. I wouldn't bother making such a stupid request in the first place. The only place worth keeping orderly is my work station. Any scientist worth their salt would maintain a properly sanitized work space on their own. That is my duty and mine alone. As an assistant your job is to do what you are told. No more, no less. If I tell you to do something it will only pertain to your profession. Right now you are not just moving personal belongings in to arrange like a common house wife. You are bringing me my tools. Something that I would have brought in myself if I didn't have to prep my work station first. If you can't do something that simple without lecturing me every time then you should consider a different career path.”
The man scoffed when Diana started going on about him having to deal with her whether he liked it or not. “Do I look like someone who is concerned about who I have to work with?” he laughed, “You are not the first assistant that I have had and you will not be the last. Your kind come and go. You are no different than the next incompetent buffoon that will take your place after you Suzie. If you are not going to work then leave now. I have no time to deal with those that don't take their job seriously or can't accept the hardships that come with it. I can do everything I need to do alone.” He could not understand what was so hard about the task he assigned her. Lambert wasn't asking for a personal maid. He had to give her some work to do. He had to bring in those supplies either way and making her bring them in for him saved him some time doing it himself as well as kept her out of his way for a short while.
Finally Lambert turned away and retreated back downstairs to continue what he started. What she chose to do now was up to her. If she stayed she would do what was asked of her, if she didn't it wouldn't bother him. He would eventually find out on his own what she decided if she followed him downstairs or left his supplies where he requested them. For now Lambert would set his focus on cleaning the counters. He cleared each counter before he dusted and disinfected it. His mind already focusing purely on his current task. After the counters were cleaned he would need to sweep and mop the floors, he also had to find the inventory check of all his old belongings in this lab and decide what he would or wouldn't keep, throw out all the unnecessary things, and clean all the things he would be keeping, only then he could bring down all his new supplies, double check the new inventory list, update that list, and start setting things up before he got started on all the countless other tasks that he had to do today.

Placing the last of the boxes where Lambert had specified, Alice was seething. She had nothing to say to him. She placed her hands on her hips thinking about how she was going to handle this. He had won this round, but she was not going to let this one man, who seemed a little crazy, get the better of her. Alice chewed on her lower lip, looking at the boxes. She had switched into her flats while she was outside, having thrown her heels into her car before finishing bringing in the boxes. She looked downstairs, listening. Lambert had disappeared back down there.
Alice looked back at the boxes. She was here to work. She would work. I will not give this asshole something to complain about...he probably will find something anyways. Alice headed down the stairs, looking at Lamberts back. She cleared her throat. "Mr. Baumann. Do you want me to start bringing the boxes downstairs?" Alice was attempting to play nice a little bit. She needed to re-feel this work relationship out. She needed to figure out what she was going to do.
On the one hand, this guy was downright unpleasent to her. On the other hand, he was an acredit to his field, and a complete genius. Alice needed to think of a gameplan and she would probably do that tonight over a glass of wine. Red wine. She crossed her arms. She was going to have a plan. She awaited his response. He was either going to a) tell her she was incompetent and should figure stuff out for herself; b) give her a straight answer, yes or no. He could just shrug and give her a non-responsive answer. He could just be silent too. She leaned against the wall, watching him clean. "Or can I be of some other use to you?" Alice kept her expression nuetral. What was he going to do?

There, the counters were clean now. With one task done Dr. Lambert moved onto his next task. The floors. Just like the counters the floor needed a through cleaning. They probably got some cleaning like the lab had received in his absence but it was not nearly good enough for the tidy and proper scientist. Lambert picked up the broom and started sweeping when he heard his new assistant calling out to him. Oh. Right. He wasn't alone. He didn't even glance up from his current task to address her. “If I wanted you to bring the boxes downstairs I would have told you to do so. What were my instructions to you?” He would wait for an answer to her. He already knew what his instructions were to Emily but she didn't seem to understand how things here worked. “Never forget your place Mary. You are here to assist me. My only duty to help you complete your task is to give you clear instructions. I will tell you when I need the supplies here.”
If Lambert had any idea just how annoyed his new assistant was with his behavior he did not show it. In the grand scheme of things he really didn't care. If she did her job right then she wouldn't be a liability to him. If she failed, if she was fortunate enough she would resign from his service before something bad happened to her. He had no time to waste on someone that couldn't fulfill their basic duties. At least she was trying to find some use for herself. After asking what to do with the boxes Jennifer asked him what else she could do. “There should be an inventory checklist in the bag in the front seat of my car.” Lambert began. “I want you to make sure that list matches all the belongings in the boxes you have upstairs. I triple checked everything before I came, but some other assistants were the ones that loaded my belongings in the car. There is a chance somethings have gone missing. After that you can take a break. If you wish to leave the house for awhile let me know when you do and how long you will be done so I won't call you unnecessarily.”

Alice gritted her teeth behind her neutral facade as he basically called her incompetent, not even bothering to look at her, and saying her name wrong at least three times. She turned, getting her new 'instructions' and headed up the stairs. She was going to kill him. Murder him into the ground. Walking outside into the sun, she shielded her eyes. She just needed to breath. Eventually it would smooth out..somewhat and maybe she wouldn't want to just stab in the back next time she saw him. And what was with the name thing? Is Alice really so hard to remember?! She let out a harsh breath, grabbing the checklist from his car and walking back inside.
True to her nature, Alice sat down with the first box, meticulously documenting everything that was in it according to the list Lambert had given her. When she was done with that box, she moved onto the next. Before Alice knew it, it had become afternoon as she opened up the last box. Each box had been correct, and was sure that this box was too, but even so she started unloading the cases, counting them out, before pausing with a frown marring her face. Alice put the list down, recounting the syringes of adrenaline and the syringes of morphine. There were supposed to be 20 cases of 10 each and she could only account for 16 cases of adrenaline and 16 of morphine. She let out a breath. Who ever stole them was a complete idiot. The least they could have done was change the number on the sheet. She stood up, smoothing out her skirt and walking to Lamberts car. Checking the backseat, the trunk, underneath the seats, she let out a frustrated breath. This was not going to be pretty.
Picking up the list and grabbing her cell phone, she dialed up the number for corporate, calling it in and making sure all the assistants who had helped Lambert load up the car were going to be brought in within the hour. Personally, if this turned out bad for her, she was going to murder the little shit who stole them idiotically. Did everyone think she was going to be some dumb bimbo? She took a deep breath, walking down the stairs to where Lambert was in the basement.
"Mr. Baumann. There was an inconsistency with the morphine and adrenaline. It is already handled and the assistants who loaded your car are already being brought into Axium for questioning. I can go and handle everything at corporate if you would like, or if you would like to go yourself, I can finish up here." Alice looked at Lambert. She had no time for petty thieves who couldn't do it right. She had work to do and a boss to figure out how to get rid of so she could move up. She crossed her arms, waiting impatiently and wondering if Lambert would be calm or if he would explode or if he would call her incompetent again.
