From what they had told her, Adam and Eve were the first humans. That's why they named her Eve, because she was the first successful creation. Well, they named her Everly. Eve for short, but Everly preferred to go by her full name. She liked the sound it, the way it sounded infinite and heavenly. It was a nice image when she was stuck in her small 6 by 6 foot cage, pacing from fenced side to the other.
Everly rolled her shoulders as she walked. Her wings, which were folded up and plastered against her back, were aching to be stretched out, but that would require taking her shirt off and there were cameras everywhere. Even though the scientists had seen every bit of her, created her, she was still peculiar about some things. She didn't want them to see her body. It was foolish, really, that she cared who saw her body. The only way anyone had ever looked at her body was strictly to observe and record. But still, it made her uncomfortable. Her body was the hers and hers alone. There wasn't a lot of room in the cage, either. She had enough room to pace a little, but her wingspan was more like 12 feet, and they wouldn't fit in the cage.
The room was cold. Either the room was always cold, or Everly was always cold. It was probably the latter, she reasoned. She was pale and she had a frail build. Her skin was covered in goosebumps as she rubbed her arms, trying to generate some heat. She wished she had a blanket, but she had lost a lot of privileges when she had tried to hang herself a few months ago. It had been a mistake. If she had learned anything from her suicide attempt, it was that she wanted to live. She just didn't want to live like a caged bird. She thought of the saying, the one that said caged birds didn't sing, and started humming a tune to herself.

Today was a terrible day. For almost a week now every day had been a terrible day for Dr. Lambert Baumann. It was hard to imagine with his current solmen demeanor and occasional violent outburst that he had been so happy before all of this. Before all of this he had been so excited for his mission. Axium was finally taking some major steps forward in its research and development. After being very successful in splicing animal and human DNA they wanted to take a step forward and start seeing what they could do with supernatural DNA. In order to do that they wanted a select few trusted and tested scientist to take charge of bringing in these supernatural creatures and any other qualified candidates for experimentation. Out of all the scientist they could have selected they had chosen him. Him! They were finally recognizing him for the hidden genius that he was! Who could blame them? It was his research that helped to make splicing easier, and it was his work that showed that it was possible to mix more than one new DNA strand into their subjects. His work with Mimi had been extraordinary. He still had a lot of work to do in that field (most of experiments didn't last), but he was good enough for his superiors wanted him to carry out this important mission.
He was suppose to take one or two experiments with him to assist him in this important task. Of course he wanted to bring his darling daughter Mimi along. She was the only subject worthy to assist him with his task. She was perfect in every way. She was the first successful multi-spliced creation. She had both the genes of a great dane, gray wolf, and human DNA rolled into one. She was also the first experiment that could fully change forms at will. She was strong, smart, and beautiful. Together they would be able to bring down any supernatural that they wanted in for testing. They would have had so much fun in the outside world. But sadly it was not meant to be. Mimi got sick just as he was making preparations for his trip. He had lost it the moment he had found out. Her illness was all his fault. She had fallen sick sometime after he had made her help dispose of all his failed projects to make room for all the new ones he was going to bring in. One of them must have upset the poor girl's stomach (probably that stupid triple bird failure), and now she was in intensive care.
He wanted to wait for her to get better but those blasted higher ups refused to let him wait on his daughter. They wanted him to go, so he had to find some new experiment or two to take with him in her place. Just thinking about taking some stupid filthy monster of someone else's doing made him furious. He deserved better than this damn it! But he had no choice. After a few days of venting on staff (half of which he sent to the infirmy in his rages) Dr. Lambert made his way down to the containment cells, with a list of possible candidates for his expedition. The man glared at the list in his hands as he walked down the halls. He didn't care for any of these beings, but one of them would have to be his pick. It was time to look these vermin over and pick the least offending of the bunch. His first stop would be at AE11316880's containment cell. Out of all the ones on his list she was somewhat interesting on paper. She was one of the first successful early experiments made around the time that he had started working here. She was around Mimi's age, but she wasn't nearly as amazing as his darling. She was part raven though. Ravens were one of Lambert's favorite birds. They were so smart and beautiful, if she had half the brains of a raven he would consider her for now.
Dr. Lambert walked along until he finally found the bird's cell. So far what he saw was not too impressive. What he found was some solemn looking girl huddled in a corner. She didn't look too much like the beautiful creature he hoped for. The only telltale sign of the animal she was spliced with he could see poking out a little underneath her shirt. But looks could be deceiving, any scientist worth his salt would not completely dismiss the potential of a new subject just at a glance. “Rise and shine...” Dr. Lambert paused to look at the clipboard attached to the front of her cell for a moment. “Everly.” Great, even her name was dull. “Get up and get ready, I am going to take you in for a physical.” The man was not in much of a cheerful mood to try to be nice with this one. He just wanted to do a quick check up, maybe ask a few questions before he made any calls on how worthy she was to take with him.

Everly looked up to see a scientist standing in front of her cell door. She recognized the man, careful to keep all emotion off of her face. It was Dr.Lambert, Mimi's father. If she was being technical, Mimi was the first successful experiment. But she was related to the scientist, his daughter, and Everly was the first test subject too succeed. Everly couldn't help the anger that boiled in her veins when she thought about Mimi. Mimi got everything - all the scientist's attention and love, all the food and luxuries she asked for, and all the freedom she wanted. What did Everly get? She got locked in a cold cage, forgotten about. It was hard not to be jealous when Mimi got so much and Everly got so little. Everly lifted a hand and rubbed the back of her neck, which was sore. She hadn't properly exercised in a few days now, and her body was aching to stretch.
"Morning to you, Doctor Lambert," Everly chirped, sarcasm dripping from her words. She stalked forward to the front of the cell, reaching out and grabbing a hold of the cold metal bars with her pale hands. When was the last time she had seen the sunlight? Too long ago. She would probably burn next time she went outside. Still, she almost couldn't hide her excitement at the thought of going outside. Usually, though, before she went out, they had to clip her wings. Just to make sure she didn't fly off. It was worth it.
"How is dear Mimi?" She asked, her lips turning up into a cold smirk. Karma was finally catching up to dear little Mimi. She was sick, very sick, and she knew that it was disheartening to Dr.Lambert. It gave her a sense of pleasure knowing that the girl was sick, and how it was emotionally affecting her father. She almost wished she had slipped Mimi a little something so she could have at least taken credit for her ailment.

Oh how sad this all was. What should have been a fun time in the outside world instead ended up being stuck in Axium, while his poor beautiful daughter was sick. Now here he was looking for a temporary replacement. This was just cruel. It broke his heart to be doing this, he wanted his fun with Mimi, but orders were orders. Despite being a man well known for doing only whatever he was interested in he owed it to this organization to at least follow some of the assignments he was given. He would do what he needed to do...he would do it sulking, pouting, and maybe throwing a few more violent fits in the process but he would do it. His search for a temporary partner brought him to Everly. Lambert's foul mood was already affecting his view on the experiment. He might've shown some interest into a spliced raven thanks to his strange obsession with that particular bird but he couldn't be bothered when his mind was elsewhere.
He didn't seem to notice or care that Everly felt the same way. It was a problem the doctor always had. He was a very passionate man when it came to things he was interested in. Once he set his sights on something fun he devoted all his time into it. Not even Mimi, bless her heart, could get his attention once it was elsewhere. Many of his test subjects were left neglected this way. Everly was one of them. While she was not one of his creations she was one of the few that had been left in his care. She was probably the only outside work that still remained alive. It was a good thing that he had assistants, the poor bird would have died otherwise. Lambert grunted in response to her greeting as he looked over her chart. He frowned when he noticed the mention of a recent suicide attempt. Great, her body was probably still compromised from the incident. This was already not boding too well. He would still give her the physical to access her but he didn't have high hopes for it.
The only time Lambert seemed to notice Everly at all was when she brought up Mimi. The man looked up from the clipboard to stare the bird girl in the eyes. The anger that flashed through them was a sight to behold, but just as soon as the anger surfaced the sadness broke through. “My darling is not feeling well at all.” the man cried. “She's too sick to come out and play with me anymore. I am a horrible father, absolutely horrible!” he banged his head against the steel bars as if by hurting himself he could make Mimi recover. Try as he might he was powerless to change the situation. Mimi was not getting any better. She wouldn't die, but she would not recover in time for what he needed her for. “I should have known better than to sick her on all those failures. She is a growing girl, and I did forget to feed her for a few days, but even on an empty stomach eating an entire cell block can't be good for your digestion could it?”
“Fear not, Mimi is a strong girl. She will get over her illness and be back to normal before you know it.” Perhaps he was misjudging this Everly girl? She seemed so concerned about Mimi's well being which surprised him. Mimi wasn't known for getting along well with the other experiments. Thanks to him putting her up against her fellow cellmates at an early age his baby girl had a tendancy of killing anyone that got too close. He had even lost a few assistants thanks to her violent behavior. Maybe she had some friends down here. It would be nice for Mimi to have friends. “Its nice of you to be so concerned, but I did not come all the way down here to talk about my daughter. Today is all about you. If you are a good girl I might give you a treat. How does that sound?” Dr. Lambert opened the door of Everly's cell and led her out of it. “I see that you had a little incident awhile ago. I hope that will be the last time you try something so silly. Only the weak and useless need to die, and you my dear are not at that point. You can still use your two legs to move, you still have your sight, and two perfectly good wings from what I have heard...wings that haven't been used all too much from the looks of it. Perhaps they can be put to good use today if you are up for it.”

Everly's sarcasm was wasted on the scientist. He actually seemed to think that Everly cared for Mimi, which she didn't, but she didn't bother to correct him. Mimi was fine, Everly had nothing personal against her, but she hated that she was better taken care of. She was jealous of the attention that was showered upon her. Even though she did not receive the instant gratification of pissing Dr. Lambert off like she had haphazardly planned when the sarcastic words slipped out of her mouth, she was still pleased that he entertained her question. She decided she could pretend to be a friend of Mimi, if it meant that it got a little more attention.
Everly leaned up against the bars when he mentioned the word 'treat'. She was like a trained dog, and at the idea of a reward, she was already willing to perform a trick. She nodded, only stepping back from the bars when he swung the door open. She hopped out of her cell, suddenly very anxious. She wanted to make sure that she was perfect for Dr. Lambert so that he would notice her again, perhaps take her out again. Now that she was outside the safety of her cell, she was on his turf. She remained close to him, never straying more than a foot from him. She didn't want to even give him the impression that she would be uncooperative. She had been in her cell, deprived of contact with others for so long that the idea of being uncooperative was simply out of the question.
"I promise I won't try anything like that again. It was a mistake," She said earnestly. In truth, her suicide attempt was really a cry for attention more than anything else. It was her way of screaming, of trying to get him to notice her. It hadn't really worked, although it hadn't completely not worked, either. It had earned her some attention, just not from the people she wanted. Her eyes widened a little with excitement at the prospect of flying - something she hadn't done in ages. Everly nodded eagerly, "I will do whatever you want me to do, Doctor." The tone of her voice had changed since the doctor had first walked in, her voice was no longer sarcastic and bitter. She was now willing to blindly follow him if it meant receiving his affection. "I promise I'll be good," She added, wanting to be totally clear to him that she would be anything but trouble. Now that Mimi was sick, this was her opportunity to step into his spotlight, and she didn't want to mess it up.

Could this really be true? Could his darling little Mimi have a friend? Dr. Lambert as usual did not catch the sarcasm in the experiment's voice when she spoke. As brilliant as the man could be he was pretty stupid when it came to socializing. Being a shut in, workaholic, down right psychotic man left very little room for him to pick up on social queues. He took the young lady's words at face value despite how unlikely it was to be true. Could you blame him? What father didn't want his daughter to be happy? Mimi was a sweet girl but sometimes it felt like he was the only one to realize it. His superiors and co-workers saw her greatness in the scientific field, but they didn't give a damn about anything else. As for Mimi's fellow cell mates? Well...they were more afraid of her than anything else. With Mimi's aggressive nature it was hard to make play dates for his little girl that didn't end in bloodshed. But despite it all she did have a friend here with this girl.
Perhaps it was time to treat Everly better? Lambert didn't know what to do to please someone that wasn't Mimi but he was willing to try. A good father was courteous to his child's friends right? He kept this thought in mind when he let Everly out of her cell. Like any experiment with half a brain Everly was very obedient. She stepped outside of the cage eagerly, looking tentative and alert, ready to follow his every order. He didn't even need to shackle her or punish her for not stepping in line. Obedience was a trait Dr. Lambert highly valued in his stock. He wasn't the type that liked to deal with the difficult ones. He had beaten most of those into submission as much as he disliked damaging his own creations. Other times he disposed of them in very inventive ways. Nothing would ever go to waste with him, not even his naughty little creations. Luckily for Everly she would not be punished today. Oh no, today was going to be her special day. Now that he knew she was Mimi's friend he was willing to treat her kindly today. She seemed thrilled at the prospect of being able to fly.
“Good girl.” Lambert smiled as he gave Everly a little pat on the head. Now that Lambert had something to focus on he was finally able to put a smile on his face. It was hard not to cheer up once he had something to look forward to. “Mistakes happen to the best of us. I have made a few mistakes myself in my time here, but that hasn't stopped me from striving for success. You were fortunate that your mistake didn't cost you your life. Now you can move forward and strive for better things in the future. Speaking of which I might have a job opportunity for you, I will tell you about it while I give you a quick exam. Follow me.” Lambert started heading off towards his lab, keeping an eye out on Everly just to be sure that she was still following him along. The journey wouldn't take them too long to make. Dr. Lambert opened the door to lead the girl inside. “Take a seat on that table over there, and take off your shirt so I can take a better look at your wings little bird.” Lambert turned towards one of his young looking female assistants. “Beth, be a dear and fetch me medical supplies.” With a nervous nod he watched the woman run off to follow his instructions before turning back to Everly. “Can you tell me how you tried to kill yourself?” he asked bluntly. It didn't really occur to him that Everly's attempted suicide might be a sensitive issue to bring up, he was merely asking so he could find out if there was any permanent damage done that could effect Everly's ability to help him out with his mission.

Like a well trained dog, Everly trotted at the Doctor's heels as he led her to the lab. She wasn't keen on physical exams, but she was used to them by now. Growing up with wings usually sanctioned many tests and physical exams. She bounced into the room, walking over to the exam table and hopping up on it. Despite her anxiety at the prospect of being shirtless, she removed her shirt without so much as a moment of hesitation. She had learned how to survive, and surviving meant following orders without hesitation. Survival meant cooperation. Survival meant ignoring the anxiety, pain, and fear. Anyways, cooperation was earning her attention. Her heart was still reeling from when he praised her.
"I tried to hang myself," Everly answered evenly. She didn't really mind talking about her suicide attempt. In fact, her eyes lit a little bit when he brought it up. No real damage had been done, because the second she tried to hang herself, orderlies busted into her cage and took her down. Not to mention that her body holds more oxygen than a normal human body, so almost no damage had been at all.
Everly glared at the assistant as she ran to grab supplies for the Doctor. She was useless and stupid, Everly seethed, and she was distracting the Doctor from her. The Doctor never gave her attention and having his attention turned away from her for only a second caused a rage within Everly.
When Everly's shirt was off and discarded onto the ground next to her, Everly's big, black wings unfurled from her back, stretching out. From tip to tip, the wings spanned about twelve feet and took up a considerable amount of space. Everly stretched them out, happy to have them out of the confinement of her shirt. "What job?" She quipped, excited to have some responsibility. She would prove to the Doctor how useful she was.

With a task to keep him busy Dr. Lambert wasted no time into getting to work. All the sadness and anger that had plagued his mind only moments before seemed to vanished instantly when he approached Everly to give her an exam. After ordering his assistant around the man turned his attention on Everly. Without her shirt it was plainly obvious that she wasn't in the greatest physical condition that she should have been. She was scrawnier than she should have been for a girl her age. That was nothing new with the experiments of Axium. Most subjects were only given the bare minimum they needed in order to survive, some even less so as punishment or to test their physical limitations. Starvation was particularly prevalent in Lambert's wing. With the scientist's bad tendency to get so caught up in his projects, and a constant shifting of his personal staff it was hard to keep feeding some of the test subjects on a regular basis. Even Mimi had moments of neglect in this area. “You are a little skinny, but thats nothing a good feeding won't fix.” the man said. Luckily for Everly and the other experiments Lambert's and Mimi's little clean up cleared up a lot of the failures that were hogging valuable resources. He could afford giving her twice the rations she was used to, to bring her up to a healthier weight.
Malnourishment wouldn't be her only issue that he needed to address. There was the aftermath of Everly's suicide attempt to worry about. He asked about what happened just so he knew what to look for in terms of damage. So she had tried to hang herself it seemed. How she had been able to pull that off was beyond him, but he didn't question it. At least she didn't try to cut her wrists or damage her wings. Dr.Lambert gentled brushed his hands over the girl's neck as he inspected it for damage. There were still faint traces of bruising around her neck but it didn't look too bad. Judging from how well she could speak she wasn't doing too badly. “How does your neck feel? Any soreness? Do you have any trouble moving it?” He asked. He would love to check her breathing just to be on the safe side but his assistant had yet to come back with the tools he asked for. Stupid interns. He shoved his annoyance aside to check on her wings when she asked him a question.
Oh right, the job he might need her for. He almost forgot that he promised to explain what was going on. “The job is a very important one~” he said as he stretched out one of the girl's wings. She had the most lovely black plummage, just like the bird she was mixed with, which brought a smile to the man's face. He just loved raven wings. Perhaps he should try to give a pair to his next project, the last bird project had been a failure but that wouldn't stop him from making the ultimate bird human. He had been too ambitious trying to mix three different birds, maybe he could try just two this time. Everly was giving him a bit of inspiration to try using raven DNA this time around. He still wanted to give his next subject the powerful legs of an ostrich so he would still play around with ostrich DNA like he had done before...Lambert had to shake himself out of his new train of thought to bring himself back to Everly's question. How long had he been standing there thinking to himself?
“I have been asked to leave the facilities to hunt down some new test subjects.” He began again. “The targets in question won't be the standard little children that we normally go for, but we are going to be hunting supernaturals. Do you know what those are little bird?” He moved over to inspect Everly's other wings. They were a little stiff from lack of use and not being stretched out all that much, but they seemed well enough to allow her to fly. He would wait for her to answer in case he needed to try and explain what he was talking about before continuing. “Because of the nature of these new creatures I can not take on this task. Its been recommended that I take some of your kind with me to bring them in. I was going to bring Mimi and maybe one other experiment to assist me. But with Mimi out of commission for awhile its very important that I find someone to take her position until she is well. I am considering taking you along provided that you are fit enough for travel. If things work out alright I would keep you with me and Mimi. I am sure she would love to work with you.”
The sounds of footsteps drew his attention to his nervous looking assistant who finally arrived with his tools. “You took your time.” he scorned, he was just about to pull out the stethoscope when he noticed some clippers and some surgical supplies mixed in with his standard examination tools. “What are these doing here?” he demanded coldly as he picked up the clippers. His assistant looked up him a hint of fear in her eyes as she took a step back from the man.
“Th-they are clippers s-sir. I thought you might want to c-clip her wings....it's standard procedure.”
Lambert didn't respond to the fool's statement. He simply put the clippers back where he found them before grabbing the scalpel. The man's action had been so fast, and so fluid that the poor woman didn't see his attack until he sliced her cheek open. The woman let out a shriek and clutched her face in terror. “You foolish sow! How can I see if my little bird can fly if I clip her wings! Get out of my sight and send someone to clean up this mess, you are getting blood all over my clean floor!” Lambert grabbed her by her hair and dragged her out the room when she didn't immediately jump into action. The woman's screams could be heard echoing out the halls by the time he re-entered the room. “My apologizes dear, I am surrounded by incompetent fools.” Lambert gave Everly a sickening smile before he went to wash his hands of the blood. He could hardly give anyone medical treatment while his hands were slick in blood. “Good help is so hard to find and I have very little patience to deal with incompetence. You at least seem better than that. Unlike my assistants I can train you to my liking and you will learn something from it....speaking of training, have you had any combat training yet?”

Despite being a little bit on the scrawny side, Everly was not that malnourished. Sure, her bones poked out a bit more than they should, and the outline of her ribs was easy to see, but compared to some of the other experiments, she was well off. She knew that compared to others, she was in pretty good condition. Everly didn't like to give luck credit, but she was lucky. She was lucky that she was successful experiment, and she was lucky she was proving to be useful. She had seen some real horrors pass through these halls. Most of the experiments had been mixed with two or three animals, and she had heard their desperate moans of pain as they slowed faded from this world. She was structurally sound - as structurally sound as one could be when mixed with two different species. Others were not so lucky. She had watched the untimely demise of more than one poorly constructed experiment.
Everly rolled her head around on her shoulders, feeling for any pain or stiffness. "None, Doctor." She chirped. She hadn't really suffered any physical side effects from her suicide attempt. Her neck had healed up quickly, and now it was almost impossible to tell that she had even tried to kill herself.
Everly didn't actually know what a supernatural was, but she assumed it was someone like her. Someone with gifted abilities or deformities or whatever you wanted to call it. Everly nodded eagerly, "That sounds easy. I can do that. I can help." She said confidently. She was oozes confidence, trying to impress him. Her eyes lit up when he mentioned that he would stay with him and Mimi. She wanted that so badly that she would actually kill for him. She nodded. Failure was absolutely not an option.
Everly hadn't even noticed the clippers until the Doctor picked them up. She sneered at the orderly as she got yelled at, her eyes gleaming as he slashed her cheek open and dragged her out. She was being a good girl. "I have had combat training." She said, averting her attention away from the screaming orderly and back to the Doctor.

My, my, my, what a confident little birdy he had here. Lambert was quite pleased with Everly which said quite a lot. The mad scientist was not an easy man to please at times, he was always at his best when he was working on something, but anything outside of that, or that might inhibit the results he wanted he could not stand. Everly's confidence and eagerness to cater to his every whim was a quality that he wanted for this mission. Everly had the right attitude, and with a bit more time she would have the right body he needed as well. Her little incident had not left her with any lasting or permanent damage for him to worry about. Once she was properly fed she would be in better condition to come to the surface world. As far as he could see Everly was good to go, he just needed to finish up his exam quickly, draw some blood for testing, and they would be good to go.
He hit a little snag with the physical exam thanks to his no good assistant. Like many of his personal staff it was only a matter of time before the new intern struck a nerve. Lambert had never been that good at dealing with others, beyond his dearly departed wife, his beloved daughter, and small children he could not handle other people without losing it at some point. Unfortunately those moments tended to be a little violent. The damage he had done would disfigure that woman, and there definitely would be more tension between him and his staff until he left. But as usual Lambert didn't concern himself with those things. After throwing Beth out he washed his hands, stepped around her blood, and went back to Everly's side. The incident put a damper in his good mood but he was still able to give the girl a smile when she answered his question.
“Good. I will still have you go back into training while you gather strength for the trip.” Lambert said as he grabbed a stethscope. “Take some slow deep breaths for me.” he did his standard breathing tests as he considered what he would do with Everly after all of this. “We have more space available now so I can arrange a better, more spacious cell for you to stay in. You will do well with increased rations, as well as daily training. I will come to supervise when I can.” Everly wouldn't be the only one that needed to get prepared for the trip. Now that Lambert's mind was more or less made up on who he would be taking with him, he needed to focus on the prep he needed to do. He made a mental checklist on all the things he needed to do while he continued the physical, checking Everly's pulse, reflexes, and other minor things. “Very good.” he said once he was done. “You are the picture of health.” he beamed at the young lady. “Just hold still for a moment so I can take some of your blood.” Lambert got a needle ready
