Nestled in the towering trees a lone mystery stood, euphoria overtaking them as they were perched in the never ending emerald canopies. Malcolm Hulderic was taking a break, a rare occasion for the PIDA agent. With his daughter in Europe and no Representative (for today at least) to defend, he was rather lost in his free time. He really had nothing else to do but work with his child no longer living with him; home only reminded him of what was missing in his life. Malcolm continued to gaze into the daylight, his worn stare seemed to long for something but it was completely out of reach now. Many found the bodyguard eccentric in his ways but it was exactly what had kept him alive all this time... especially during that time. His mind began to flutter to a secret section of his mind and his face began to mold from uplifting hope to utter defeat. He had still not accomplished his duty but this place was alien to him. It was too comfortable, too peaceful.
“Malcolm, what are you thinking, you must wait. Wait for the right time and it will come. Maybe this place isn’t the same, maybe this place is completely different?” His voice faded to inaudible mumbles as he tried to reassure himself. Many did not realize that he was different from the rest, and not just because of what he could do. “Oh Emma, I wish you could see this.”
As he continued, the delicate breath of nature pulled him from his serious thoughts and his mind returned to the beautiful image before him. He recalled the start of his life working for the PIDA, finding purpose in protecting those who could not. Hell, he was the official bodyguard for a individual that did not need it, however it made Malcolm feel more comfortable trying to defend her life anyway. It was the only thing he knew, the only thing that kept him going here.
Suddenly, the sound of a twig snapping within the brush alerted Malcolm, who swiveled on his heel rapidly, trying to catch a single glimpse of what was hiding within. He placed of a stern hand onto the weapon holstered at his hip and prepared to remove it. However, within moments his irises caught sight with a small bundle of fur hopping innocently through, unaware of Malcolm. The agent calmed, releasing a long huff of relief. The man hopped from the treetop, land a few feet away from the frightened creature. It attempted to escape but Malcolm, through his “luck” managed to snatch the animal by the scruff. Holding it up, he wondered why exactly he attempted this. He stared at the terrified creature, which stared by, huffing and puffing from the shock.
“Its all right little one.” He whispered, obviously not expected a response. “I didn’t mean to frighten you. I just wanted to look at you.” As he spoke he began to coddle the little animal in his arms, petting its soft fluffy fur with a gentle grin on his face. He had never set eyes on a rabbit before and most especially had never touched one. It was unbelievably soft. Malcolm continued to console the animal, which sniffed and shifted in his hands.
“I’m sorry little one...” He whispered. “I’ll let you go soon, don’t worry.” A heart-warming chuckle escaped his lips and his calming body language seemed to rub off on him as its breathing began to slow.
