The crunch of gravel met Gabe's ears as he stepped out of his truck, followed quickly by the sounds of Stacy's paws sending the gravel flying. His large, gloved hand patted her head and scratched her ears before heading toward the back of the large trailer hitched to his truck. His leg still hurt, each limp feeling like someone was poking and prodding him with a fire poker. He grit his teeth and bore the pain, though. At least he could walk again, and that was more than enough a pleasure, worth all the discomfort he'd endured over the past few weeks. He could probably have done without Stacy's constant desire to be rubbing against his legs all the time, however. The large Shepherd had nearly tripped him on multiple occasions.
The latch of the trailer squealed slightly as it was lifted, and the hinges of the gate squeaked their need of lubrication. He made a mental note to handle it as soon as he returned home. "That ride wasn't so bad, was it, now?" he said gruffly. The young dappled 2-year-old snorted and moved uneasily, eyes wide, ears forward with curiosity, and nostrils flaring with the scents of other animals. Gabe climbed inside the trailer and untied the lead rope. The loosening of his restraints caused the colt to near bolt from his containment, but Gabe held fast, barely avoiding a stumble out of the trailer as he led the colt forward. "I'm not so fast on my feet these days, Spit," he said, grinning at the horse who seemed not to notice his owner at all, too busy was he with taking in the sights of the facilities around them.
Stacy nosed at Spitfire's right front hoof, and the colt raised it quickly to paw at the air and shoo her away. "Watch it, Stace," Gabe cautioned. "We don't need a repeat of the last time ya put yer nose where it didn't belong." The dog whined just a little, before its attention was drawn by the approach of familiar footsteps. The veterinarian came over and shook Gabe's hand with a big, toothy grin. "Sorry I couldn't make it to yer farm the otha day. Been real busy." "Not a problem," came Gabe's reply. "Although it was more than enough trouble gettin' Hardhead here into the dern trailer."
