Ronnie kept her eyes directed downward, her brow coming together as Kalkrin started speaking. What he said about himself hurt her more than anything else. The girl slowly looked back up to the boy, her eyes troubled. "Just because I'm a stranger doesn't mean I don't care... And I don't hate you, either," she said, looking away again. Just as she finished speaking another crack of thunder suddenly sounded, and the girl flinched heavily, her hands reflexively pulling together into fists.

Kalkrin narrowed his eyes. He didn't ask her to care. He didn't want her to care. He didn't even know her. He didn't know if he wanted to. To Kalkrin this girl seemed like she would get hurt easily, and... Kalkrin knew he just couldn't protect someone like that. Look at Narissa. She was so easy to break, and he was so destructive. "You shouldn't care. No one cares, and I don't need another person that's so easy to hurt, because knowing me I would f*cking break you in a heartbeat." Kalkrin stood there as the girl jumped. He felt bad she had to encounter him, but he wouldn't ever say that.

"You can't just be alone, Kalkrin..." the girl said quietly, her fists tight. Her eyes roamed for a second before landing on a stray blade of grass that was taller than all the rest around it. "And if you feel this way... Then why..." Ronnie paused for a second, staring down at the grass before suddenly looking back up to the boy. "Then why did you bother helping me. Or giving me your coat," she said, her words questions but somehow coming out as somewhat accusatory statements. Her eyes were still glazed over from her tears from before, and she bit her lip anxiously after she spoke. She was trying to figure this out, as well as trying to keep her cool. She knew that they were strangers, yes, but everybody starts off as strangers. You have to give people a chance to prove themselves.

Why couldn't he just be alone? His family had no problem just leaving him alone. He had no problem being left alone, given it took some getting used to. He couldn't hurt anyone that way. Not that he really even cared who he hurt anymore. Most people just learned to get the f*ck over it and suck it up, leaving him in the dust. Before he could give Veronica his two-cents, she spoke again. This question froze the boy. Kalkrin didn't have an answer. The boy kept his eyes narrowed, looking toward Veronica but not at her. "Be... Because... Because I..." Kalkrin just didn't know. And that made the Oushaga angry. She asked him a question he couldn't answer, and to him it was an attempt to make the boy look stupid. He was angry, but not at her. For no reason, really. I DONT KNOW OKAY? I DIDN'T WANT SOMEONE TO SUFFER FOR NO REASON IF I COULD HELP IT, I JUST... It made f*cking sense. It just made f*cking sense." Kalkrin took a deep breath and closed his eyes, lifting his chin to the sky. The cool rain felt good on his steaming skin and sore headache. He did know why now. It was because he would've wanted help too. Kalkrin would've wanted someone kind and genuinely caring to come to his aid too.

The shapeshifter flinched again, though this time the thunder wasn't the cause. She drew in a deep breath and exhaled it, watching as the cool, stormy air condensed it and made it look like a little cloud. What had driven Kalkrin to be this way? Why... Why was he so okay with being alone? Ronnie... She... She just couldn't stand it. Being alone. It drove her crazy. There was a number of reasons for that, though. The girl dug the toe of her shoe into the muddy earth below, watching her foot with what seemed to be great concentration. After a moment or two she looked back up to her momentary companion. "Will you please just give me a chance? Just one chance, that's all I'm asking for," the girl said, her voice quiet and masking over some kind of deep sadness. Even she didn't know why she was asking. There was just something inside of her that wouldn't let him go without a fight. She shifted a little in her spot, uncomfortable with how she had made him so angry. If she hadn't gone to him for help, none of this would've happened... And Kalkrin probably would've been much better off.
